SAM-e is the abbreviation for S-adenosylmethionine and is actually pronounced as “Sammy.” SAM-e is thought to be involved in more than 35 biochemical processes in the body. As a dietary supplement, SAM-e has several therapeutic indications: treats pain, stiffness and joint swelling; improves mobility; rebuilds cartilage and eases symptoms of osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, bursitis, tendinitis, chronic low back pain and depression.
SAM-e is recognized as an effective anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-reliever) for patients with osteoarthritis. If SAM-e is an effective treatment for you, results may be felt in about a week. SAM-e is a prescription medication in Europe and a dietary supplement in the United States. SAM-e has been used for over 20 years in Europe to treat arthritis and depression. Since it is not marketed as a prescription medication in the United States as it is in Europe, be careful and cautious about the brand and quality of SAM-e that you purchase. Choose a dietary supplement brand with a good reputation. Select a SAM-e supplement that is enteric coated because this nutrient can be easily destroyed by stomach acids. Enteric coated protects the ingredients as they pass through the stomach acid juices and into the small intestine, where the coating dissolves and the ingredients are absorbed to nourish your cells and organs.
Individuals using prescribed medications such as antidepressants, including Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and MAO Inhibitors should consult a physician before using. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease, bi-polar disorder or manic depression should not use SAM-e.
Dosage: 600mg – 1,200mg for osteoarthritis
